Three Storage Ideas for Your Kitchen Renovation

When planning a kitchen renovation, one element that requires a lot of focus is cabinetry. Here are some ideas to help you design the best arrangement.

Corner Cabinets

The lower corner cupboards in a kitchen are notoriously hard to access. They're low and deep, creating dead areas. You have several options to make this zone more productive. A Lazy Susan gives access to the back by swinging around, but it may not create the most storage space. Another possibility is L-shaped drawers that you can pull out. Once open, you can see and easily reach everything inside.

A third, more novel option is a nook of open shelves, on which you can put items such as cooking books or an attractive vintage mixing bowl. A nook like this can add character to the design, whether it's modern or old-world. You could alternatively put crockery or glasses there. It has a more interesting look than the standard open shelves higher on the wall.

Ceiling-High Cupboards

After you have resolved the tricky corner cabinetry, you can turn your attention to another spot, the highest area above the upper cupboards. You may wonder if you should extend the cupboards to the ceiling or leave a small gap along the top. This small space can provide a spot for knick-knacks. Plus, in a compact kitchen, the free space above the cupboards provides airiness.

Ceiling-height cupboards have advantages as well, as they provide extra storage. You can build ultra-tall cupboards to the ceiling or break up the cupboards by fitting a row of small cupboards along the top. These are hard to reach but handy for items you don't use much.

Open Shelves

Another idea is to fit open shelves across an entire wall section. You can use stained timber or another material, such as metal, for an industrially styled kitchen. You can also paint the shelves, depending on their material, in different colours for unique decor. For example, the shelves could be blue, green or yellow.

Custom kitchens can feel more spacious with a lot of shelving, as they don't protrude into the room to the same extent as cupboards. Plus, shelves don't have doors that form a virtual wall. Open shelves let you see where everything is, so they can motivate you to stay organised and throw out or recycle what you don't need. You do have to be careful, however, to keep them relatively neat, or the kitchen may appear messy.
